Grab Your Cape and Fly on #NationalRideTheWindDay

iFly Ride With the Wind DayAs publicists, we are always on the lookout for a good “hook” to get our clients noticed. When we identified the hashtag holiday #NationalRideTheWindDay, we knew we landed a windfall for our clients at iFLY Indoor Skydiving.

With both the Fort Lauderdale and Orlando iFLY wind tunnels packed in our proverbial “parachute,” the dynamos at Fort Lauderdale PR firm Durée & Company floated the idea for iFLY to make an event out of #NationalRideTheWindDay and 25% off for first-time flyers on #NationalRideTheWindDay was born.

Created to celebrate the anniversary of the first man-powered flight, #NationalRideTheWindDay was intended to be some high-flying fun for the whole family. At iFLY, first-time flyers, aged three to 103, simply lay on a cushion of air while an IBA-certified IFLY instructor helps them control their bodies to experience true human flight in a safe, comfortable and fun environment – without having to jump out of an airplane.

iFLY Indoor Skydiving opened its very first facility in Orlando in 1999. iFLY Orlando spent the better part of nearly two decades as that city’s most popular non-theme park attraction. It was only fitting that when iFLY debuted its newest facility and the very first to feature dual, side-by-side flight chambers that it be in Orlando as well. iFLY Fort Lauderdale was the company’s 27th wind tunnel that opened in February 2017.

iFLY Indoor Skydiving was founded by a man who wanted to share his love of skydiving with his family. Durée & Company was founded by a woman who was born to share his story with the world. As a result of this perfect fit, on Wednesday, August 23, 2017, first-time flyers can enjoy 25% off the entire #NationalRideTheWindDay and become part of the eight million people iFLY has safely flown.

Earned vs. Paid Media: What’s the Difference?

In this day and age of the internet and social media, success is all about visibility. At Fort Lauderdale PR firm Durée & Company, we strive to make our clients visible on various social media platforms and news outlets to ensure the best coverage. There are countless ways to spread the word about a client, such as Instagram posts, editorial coverage, newspaper ads, and clickbait to name a few. These methods are just some examples of earned and paid media. You may be wondering what exactly those terms mean and what the difference is, so we’re breaking them down here.

  • Earned Media – Sharing. These can be mentions or reposts on social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, as well as reviews on websites like Yelp. Earned media also includes traditional PR coverage, such as editorial articles written by media as the result of proactive pitching. Businesses do not pay for this publicity, yet they benefit greatly from the third party endorsement, promotion and engagement opportunities earned media provides.
  • Paid Media – Advertising. This includes space in a publication or on a website that a company pays for in order to promote a product or service. You’ve probably seen this type of media on your favorite celebrity’s Instagram and along the sides of most of your frequently visited websites.

Both forms of media are important, but companies should shift their focus to earned media. The power of editorial coverage is undeniable and without advertising dollars at play, this kind of visibility is trusted and highly regarded. Social media have created an immense platform for sharing information and promoting clients without spending an obscene amount of money on ad space. Yes, it’s effective to pay a celebrity to endorse a product on their highly visible page, but mentions from several social media accounts which build up over time and articles in reputable publications can be just as effective for a much lower cost.

But a business cannot depend entirely upon earned media and expect to be successful. A combination of the two, with increased emphasis on and dedication to receiving earned media, will help a business flourish and grow, one share or click at a time.

A-Rod and Giancarlo Stanton Visit Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade for All-Star Week Event

Events can be stressful for publicists, but throwing a celebrity into the mix elevates the event to a whole new level. Alex “A-Rod” Rodriguez, an alumnus of Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade, recently returned home to the club where he learned how to play baseball. The purpose of his trip, which took place during MLB All-Star Week, was to open the new Teen Center and its beautiful mural by renowned local artist David “LEBO” Le Batard at Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s Kendall Club and dedicate the refurbished baseball fields by throwing out the first pitch. Having the celebrity component plus an All-Star event meant The D&Co Dynamos were needed on deck for some serious media attention for our client, Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade!

The Dynamos from Fort Lauderdale PR firm Durée & Company rallied the forces to spread the word about this MLB All-Star Legacy event far and wide. With all of our publicists on base, our team hit for the fences, outreaching to media for onsite event coverage spanning not only our local market but the national market. Thanks to our extensive media relationships and networking, we were able to personally secure local and national media to attend. We also utilized our far-reaching relationships to coordinate interview opportunities. The Dynamos provided staffing onsite and navigated on-camera opportunities with our client, as well as real-time social media coverage via Facebook Live.

But there was no seventh-inning stretch for The Dynamos! The ladies continued post-event media outreach by managing post-event requests for images and b-roll, hitting a grand slam for Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade and garnering media coverage that reached both national and international audiences. Media outlets included ESPN, “Entertainment Tonight” and “Extra!”; local TV coverage on WFOR CBS 4, WTJV NBC 6 and WSVN FOX 7; the New York Post and New York Daily News; as well as Sports Illustrated, People Magazine, People en Español and our local Miami Herald.

The event was part of the MLB/Miami Marlins All-Star Week youth and community initiatives that seek to impact the lives of underserved and special needs youth. The guest list was star-studded, boasting VIP attendees such as Miami Marlins Owner David Samson; All-Star Outfielder Giancarlo Stanton; Miami Marlins legends Andre Dawson, Jack McKeon and Charles Johnson; and MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred. A-Rod gave an emotional speech about the life-changing experiences he had at the Club and meeting his baseball coach and mentor, Eddie Rodriguez. Following the ceremony, Stanton’s charity, All-Star Smiles Foundation, provided free preventative dental care and education for approximately 100 children with Dr. Craig Spodak, DDS.
