What does work-life balance mean to you? It can hold a varied interpretation based on the type of position you hold or industry that you work in. At Miami and Fort Lauderdale-based public relations agency Durée & Company, we know it is important to lead a balanced lifestyle.
In a recent Forbes article, it states that 94% of working professionals reported working more than 50 hours per week according to a Harvard Business school survey. Experts agree that a good work-life balance can enable employees to feel more in control of their work life and lead to increased productivity.
The talented talk show host, television producer and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey once said, “I’ve learned that you can’t have everything and do everything at the same time.” For those looking for work-life balance tips, the D&Co Dynamos compiled a list to help you get started.
Set weekly manageable goals. Set goals and priorities to accomplish weekly to help guide you. Create a to-do list for each task or project you are working on then update them as you go about each day. Most importantly, don’t forget to ask for help when you need it!
Take five. Taking a small break during work to grab a cup of coffee, eat lunch or regroup on your day will help you clear your head and make good decisions. Schedule time on your calendar to make sure you stay on track.
Tune in. Did you know that listening to your favorite music at work can help foster concentration, reduce stress and anxiety and stimulate creativity? At D&Co, we listen to our favorite tunes on Pandora that help us power through our day. In fact, studies dating back many years show the benefits of music in everyday life can even lower your blood pressure.
Unplug. Take time from your day to unplug from technology and recognize the need for personal time as well. Many of the D&Co Dynamos have embraced the practice of meditation, which helps calm the mind and allows for deeper thinking.
Stay active (or begin a plan to get active). It is a well-known fact that regular exercise reduces stress, depression and anxiety. If you don’t have a gym or exercise routine in place, take the time to discover activities that interest you. Some of our office favorites that can also boost your immune system are Zumba, spinning or Pilates.
Treat your body right. This should be simple to follow, right? Most people forget that it is important to eat right, exercise and get in eight hours of rest. Make time in your schedule ahead of the work week to plan out your meals and determine the days of the week when you can exercise.
While these tips can be used at work or home, we certainly hope you take them into consideration and they help you lead a balanced life. It is never too late to start adopting these changes into your routine.
