Ready, Set, Pitch! How to Make Your Pitches Stand Out

By June 27, 2017May 23rd, 2018No Comments

Journalists receive hundreds of pitches in any given week, so what should you say to make sure you get noticed instead of ignored? That’s why we are here!

  • Personalize – Take the time to research who you are pitching. Know their beats, how to spell their name correctly – you’d be surprised how important this is to some journalists – and for which outlets they write. It always helps to read previously written articles to get an idea of their writing style and topics they cover.
  • Short and Sweet – Keep your “love note” about what you’re pitching concise. As we previously mentioned, some journalists receive hundreds of pitches each week and will be turned off if they open a pitch that’s too long.
  • Catchy Subject Line – This is key to making your pitch stand out. You need to catch the journalist’s attention right off the bat to ensure they don’t pass by your pitch without even reading it.
  • Be Excited – Get excited about what you’re pitching! Let the person you’re emailing feel the passion behind your pitch – sell it to them.

Even with these tips, don’t forget to always follow up. Many journalists will thank you for following up because your pitch fell off their radar or they were preoccupied writing another piece. With this advice, you’re ready to go. Happy pitching!
