On Wednesday, May 1, 2019, United Way of Broward County’s Women United ― a powerful network of women confronting head-on the most critical issues facing the Broward County community ― hosted its 8th Annual Magnolia Luncheon at the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center. The event, which recognizes women of dignity, strength and perseverance, was attended by United Way of Broward County donors who give $1,000 or more to the 2018-2019 Annual Campaign and sponsors.

Due to its growing attendance, the luncheon was recently moved to the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center and this year, over 400 guests attended the event. Prior to the luncheon, VIP guests, guests who give $2,500 or more to the 2018-2019 Annual Campaign, had the opportunity to attend a meet and great with keynote speaker, Lisa Ling, award-winning journalist and host of CNN’s “This is Life with Lisa Ling.”

All attendees were invited to browse and shop among some of Broward’s best boutiques including: Bolt, Bonnie’s Loft, Girl Rocks 2, India Hicks, Marzee Fashion, Morph Clothing, Revolution Prep, Sapphire Seahorse, Sip and Sparkle, Voyage Boutique and Yacht Decor. Guests were invited to partake in a drawing for a Secret Armoire filled with prizes valued at over $5,000 presented by the Colonnade Outlets at Sawgrass Mills.

The event’s co-chairs, Angie Davis and Alice Jackson, welcomed guests to an inspiring afternoon and presented honorees Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, President & CEO of Celebrity Cruises, as the recipient of the Woman of Inspiration Award and Nicole Golemi, Independent Business Development Consultant, with the Woman of Promise Award. Each of these women shared their personal stories about their experiences with Women United.

As the afternoon progressed, United Way of Broward County President and CEO, Kathleen Cannon, presented how the dollars raised during the luncheon will help United Way of Broward County continue to fight for the health, education and financial stability of every person in our community.

“We are grateful for the overwhelming number of people who turned out this afternoon to help raise critical dollars for those in need in our community,” said Mary Beth Albritton, United Way of Broward County’s Director of Women’s Philanthropy. “Without the support from all of these amazing women, we wouldn’t be able to confront head-on the most critical issues facing Broward County.”

The afternoon ended with a powerful keynote speech given by Lisa Ling, award-winning journalist and host of CNN’s “This is Life with Lisa Ling,” who shared her experiences from her travels across the world in which she immersed herself in communities that are unusual, extraordinary and sometimes dangerous.
