Instagram Is Bringing Back Its Chronological Feed: Introducing the New Toggle Feature

In a recent announcement, Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, announced that the app is unveiling some big changes to the overall feed and experience of Instagram. The new interface will allow users to choose between three different feeds with two new options, “Favorites” and “Following” which can sort content chronologically, and a third “Home” option which offers the algorithmically sorted feed we have currently. At Fort Lauderdale and Aspen-based public relations and marketing agency Durée & Company, we know it’s important to have options. Here’s a breakdown of these views and new features to toggle between.

Favorite:

Introducing the “Favorite” feed. We saw Instagram testing out a similar feature with a “close friends” option on stories and now we are seeing a similar option for viewing a select group of followers. Right now, only a limited group of users currently have access to “Favorites.” If you have it, you’ll see a green star icon on your Instagram profile. Tap that, and then you can choose which friends get to be part of the desirable list. Similar to the “close friends” option, you can add or take away people from your “Favorites” list at any time. You’ll want to be smart about it since people can tell when they’re on — or off — your “Favorites” list. Toggle between those feeds when you’re looking for your real-life besties while having the option to choose when you want to see ads and influencers. Have you added @dureecopr as a “Favorite” yet?

Following:

Remember the good ol’ days where you could see your followers’ captions and images in real-time? It’s back! “Following” will enable Instagram users to return to the chronological feed of posts from accounts they follow, which had been the default prior to the 2016 change.

Home:

Don’t like change? Don’t worry! The “Home” setting is what everyday IG users are familiar with and it’s here to stay. This feed is generated by Instagram based on what it thinks will interest each user, ranked using an algorithm. The “Home” feed was once controversial so it’s nice to see that chronological feeds will be making a comeback, by popular demand.

Why is all of this so significant? Well, when you think about it – it creates more opportunities for Instagram to deliver suggested content through the main feed, while still having a “Following” feed available. Some users have already noticed the new options. We’re at the edge of our seats waiting for the change to become available to all users. Can’t keep up with all the latest trends? Give us a call!
