Trending: Social Media! Emerging Trends for 2020

By December 10, 2019March 23rd, 2021No Comments

Are you planning your 2020 marketing? At Aspen and Fort Lauderdale-based public relations agency Durée & Company, we’ve kept our clients competitive in their diverse industries by adapting to and leveraging evolving trends year after year. The Dynamos are sharing 5 social media trends you need to know about for 2020 to help you stay ahead of the curve.

  1. Where Did Instagram Likes Go?

Instagram is hiding likes as a new way to lower the pressure and competition on Instagram. The test is part of a new push to protect the mental health of vulnerable young users. Hiding likes is meant to help people focus on connections and remove competition and high pressure around how many likes a post will get.

  1. Influencer Marketing Must Be Authentic and Real

To piggyback off hidden Instagram likes, now it’s more important than ever for influencer authenticity. For influencers, this will likely mean a continued shift away from aesthetics and the number of followers and a focus on the actual sale of products or services. This also means influencer content will need to become higher quality since users won’t be able to lean on the number of likes per post.

This means that more tangible and sales-driven metrics could potentially come to the forefront, with brands placing increased importance on the measurement of clicks, affiliate marketing, and in-store sales.

  1. Niche Social Platforms Will Explode

Facebook and Instagram have long dominated as the most popular social media platforms. However, in recent years, several other niche social media platforms have significantly taken the spotlight.

TikTok, for example, is one such platform that started in 2016 and immediately gained popularity among people under the age of thirty. According to Mediakix.com, TikTok has surged in popularity, surpassing the likes of Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Snapchat in monthly App Store installs and worldwide downloads. We will likely continue to see other social media platforms emerge in 2020 and beyond.

  1. Social Commerce Will Expand

Swipe up! The ease of shopping for a product you see in a photo keeps getting more seamless. Social commerce has become a new retail avenue for brands and this trend is only going to get stronger. From Facebook stores to Instagram shoppable posts, social networks are continuously developing and evolving to take the main stage in retail platforms.

We live in a society where customers expect efficiency and fast shopping experiences. With social commerce, consumers don’t have to open a new app or interrupt what they’re doing at all.

  1. Video Content Will Dominate

If you’re not currently creating videos, it is time that you include them in your marketing strategy. According to statistics compiled by Go-Globe, 82 percent of internet traffic is expected to be live video by 2020. Whether it’s a quick video on TikTok, an Instagram story or a YouTube channel, videos are the future of social media.  People enjoy and interact often with video because it allows them to consume more information, quickly and without much effort.

While we can’t predict the future, we do know that social media is here to stay and will continue to evolve. To stay relevant, you’ll need to keep up with trends and forecast what strategies will be long-lasting for your business. Need help getting your 2020 strategy together? Our team is ready to manage your social media presence dynamically, responding to the continual fluctuations in the social media world.
