Fort Lauderdale, Fla. — (Dec. 7, 2017) — Located in Fort Lauderdale’s classic Bryan Building, listed in the National Historic Registry, The Hideaway speakeasy bar will be unveiled in December 2017. Offering a glimpse into historic downtown Fort Lauderdale, The Hideaway serves artisanal cocktails, approximately 30 varieties of craft beers, a large whiskey selection, and an eclectic rotating counter-style menu in an industrial chic setting, with exceptional service.
Acclaimed Designer Kurt VanNostrand, owner of 5&Dime Design, saved the historic designs from the original space in the Bryan Building, even uncovering original columns that were constructed of Dade County Pine. Offering a unique walk back in time, The Hideaway features an authentic lounge, refurbished and reclaimed décor, stamped tin ceilings, and custom period furniture. VanNostrand, who specializes in unique and out-of-the-box designs and hospitality concepts, worked in the hospitality industry himself for over 25 years.
Built in approximately 1913, the two-story Bryan Building was constructed for Thomas Bryan, a member of one of Fort Lauderdale’s most notable pioneer families. One of the first hotels in Fort Lauderdale’s original downtown district, it was one of the initial commercial buildings constructed after the 1912 fire that destroyed much of the original Fort Lauderdale.
“The Hideaway is unlike any other bar in Fort Lauderdale; it is the first in the city that is a speakeasy, New York-type bar with a history,” said Michael Tuck, owner of The Hideaway, and longtime nightclub and bar owner. “It pays homage to the exciting, multi-faceted history of Fort Lauderdale, while being a part of Fort Lauderdale’s continuing revitalization.”
Tuck has owned and operated successful establishments including Automatic Slims, a high-energy rock ‘n’ rock bar in Miami Beach; and Play and Stereo, two of the first VIP EDM (electronic dance music) clubs in Fort Lauderdale.
Mixologist and Miami native Carla Rivera brings over 15 years of experience to The Hideaway as the developer of its drink menu. An award-winning mixologist, Rivera now serves as a South Florida mixologist for Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits, where she specializes in on-premise cocktail development. Most recently, she served as head bartender of Fontainebleau Miami Beach’s renowned modern Chinese restaurant, Hakkasan.
The Hideaway’s cocktails use fresh fruits and artisan crafted syrups, such as blueberry basil and honey pineapple. These unique concoctions were created by up-and-coming chef, Sergio Velazquez.
The drink menu entices with craft cocktails, about 30 types of craft beers, and a massive whiskey selection. It dazzles with unique concoctions, dedicated to the founding families of Fort Lauderdale. Craft cocktails range from $11 – $15. A few examples are:
- The Hideaway: Bulleit Bourbon, strawberry & blueberry basil syrup, lemon juice
- The Shepherd: Grey Goose, St. Germain, blueberry basil syrup, lemon juice
- The McCrory: Knob Creek 100, Angostura bitters, filthy cherry, orange twist
